The Allure of Cruise Collection

Cruise Collection, or "Resort Wear", or "Cruise Wear" (Collection Croisière in French), is an inter-season or pre-season line of clothing produced by luxury fashion houses. It comes in addition to the the recurrent bi-annual seasonal collections S/S (Spring/Summer) and F/W (Fall/Winter), heralded at major fashion shows in Paris, Milan, New York and London.

It is launched in winter season and designed for any ad-hoc, summerish getaways. Those collections showcase lighter fabrics, eye-catching colors, and a blend of casual, yet sophisticated designs. They are also a true representation of the brand's designer visions.

But, where does it come from ?

Origins

Originally meant for wealthy elite layers of the society, vacationing on cruises around Mediterranean sea during the Winter months, those collections have evolved throughout the years. It used to be very high-end, especially eveningwear: men used to wear tuxedos and women wore long gowns, covered in furs and luxury jewelry, during the dinners that were attended by the captain as well. Daywear, even if not as sophisticated as evening wear, was also quite formal, consisting of elegant dresses for women, and suits with vests for men.

With time, resort wear has transformed to become much more casual and designed for comfort of the travelers and jet-setters.

Coco Chanel's Real Impact on Cruise Collections

Cruise collections have been the DNA of Chanel from the beginning of its history. Coco Chanel chose Deauville as her 1st store outside Paris. A pure businesswoman, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was very active and sporty herself, and she diligently curated her collections to the needs of like-minded women who were enjoying outdoor activities on a sunny coastal resort.

Sailor shirts, loose linen trousers, long skirts and turtlenecks were all designed for women’s comfort and freedom of movement, but were also very chic and elegant at the same time. The boutique in a resort town was a great success and Chanel opened another store in a different resort town, Biarritz, in 1915.

One of the biggest things that Coco Chanel brought into fashion was creating sportswear that was considering the comfort of women, and so, moving away from traditional romanticism that was typical for female fashion. Huge impact on fashion.

Cruise Collections Nowadays

Across the Fashion industry, all major houses have embraced the "Cruise Collection" concept. To name a few, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren......

In this landscape, the resort wear has been chosen as "specific product" category. It has been growing in up in popularity across the globe, especially in tourists destinations like Saint-Tropez, Monaco, Capri, the Greek Islands, Miami, Dubai, Costa Rica. It has become a cross-cultural style that signifies relaxation, affluence, appreciation of nature which displays a sense of style.

Patterns are flowers all kinds, ceramics, linens, earthy shades, long dresses but with a perfect cut. Matching codes are sandals, wide-brim straw hats, hair clips, and of course, totes.
