Who has never heard of the Cave Canem ? This inscription, 2000 years old, was used in Roman times to warn some ill-intentioned person about to enter the owner's dwelling.
Did you know that this depiction of man's best friend and guardian is not the only specimen to be seen in the ruins of Pompeii ? There are actually two other major mosaics in the Naples (Napoli) region. One is still showing a big dog on a leash (at house of Paquio Proculus). Finally, one can observe another dog in the House of Orpheus, but it depicts a docile dog.
